RYA COURSES
Sail Ionian plans to be operating in the Caribbean for RYA training and informal refresher training from Dec 2012.
Choose to do a 6 day RYA course or alternatively take an RYA instructor with you on board your charter yacht for a flexible no. days to refresh your knowledge and learn as much as little or as much as you would like.
Start Yachting (2 Days)
A short introduction to yacht sailing for those who have never sailed before.
This course aims to introduce many aspects of sailing and you will learn some of the skills required to be useful crew on a yacht anywhere in the world. Skills includes knots and rope handling, sailing terms, points of sail, safety and much much more. It is a fun 2 days.

RYA Competent Crew (5-7 Days)
A great experience builder and the perfect introduction to sailing!
You will learn all the skills required to be a useful crew member aboard a yacht anywhere in the world. This includes knots and rope handling, sailing terms, points of sail, mooring techniques, safety and much much more. You will come away from a fantastic and informative sailing holiday in beautiful surroundings with a wealth of knowledge that will serve as a solid foundation for any further sailing you chose to do.
With 7 days on the yacht you can really push yourselves to learn as much as possible. The 7 days also includes longer passages over 6 hours, additional night sailing and more.
Assumed knowledge: None or dinghy sailors.
Following courses: Day Skipper Theory and Day Skipper Practical.
RYA Day Skipper (7 Days)
This course teaches you the skills needed to safely skipper a yacht in familiar waters by day. You will be taught boat handling, stronger wind sailing, pilotage, seamanship and navigation, safety and much more. The course duration is 5 days, including at least one night passage of 4+ hours and the other days will be spent refreshing skills or relaxing - whatever you choose!
Some nights will be spend at anchor, others on mooring buoys, others in marinas - all to give you the maximum learning options.
Min Age: 16 years. We suggest that you have completed at least 5 days sea time including 100 miles and 4 night hours prior to taking the course, commonly achieved in the form of a Competent Crew course. It is also essential to have knowledge of the day skipper theory before taking the practical course.
Assumed knowledge: Basic navigation and sailing ability.
Following courses: Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory and Mile Building trips
Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation and RYA/MCA Examination
This is a preparation week or two weeks before taking the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Examination. It is a thorough week of training including plenty of night sailing, sailing and powerboating exercises and navigation plus much more.
Min Age: 17 years. To take the exam candidates require minimum: 30 Days Seatime, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours (min half of these miles must be tidal). Also required VHF licence, First Aid Certificate.

Yachtmaster Offshore Preparation and RYA/MCA Examination
This is an intensive preparation week or two weeks before taking the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Examination. Sailing will not be limited to the Ionian. It is a thorough week of training including plenty of night sailing, sailing exercises and power handling exercises as well as navigation and passage planning and much more.
Min Age: 17 years. To take the exam candidates require minimum: 50 Days Seatime, 5 min passages over 60 miles in which min 2 were as skipper, 2500 miles (half in tidal waters), experience navigating and skippering at night. Also required VHF licence, First Aid Certificate.
