RYA SEA SCHOOL: Sail Cruising Courses
Sail Ionian is an RYA training centre offering expert tuition for all levels of experience.
Our sea school aims to provide expert, informal, relaxed, friendly, and safe instruction in a safe and fun sailing environment.
Sail Ionian specialises in the Competent Crew and Non Tidal Day Skipper Sailing Courses in Greece for all abilities and ages. We welcome family sailing courses, couples, groups of friends and individual sailing, and we encourage everyone on board to have a go. If you and your crew would like to be qualified, and are mixed abilities, we are happy to teach different sailing courses on the same yacht.
Our courses are personalised to meet the needs and expectations of you and your crew. With a maximum of four per course, this gives time for individual tuition and attention to all on board. A relaxed and informal approach from experienced instructors, a day to practice and build confidence at the end of the course and with an ideal area to learn both sailing and boat handling, we aim to provide a unique, valuable and fun learning experience.
All RYA sailing courses are on one of our Bavaria yachts (no more than 5 seasons old). We also offer mile building/sail cruising weeks for individuals early and late season.
Competent Crew
A perfect introduction to sailing!
You will learn all the skills required to be a useful crew member aboard a yacht anywhere in the world. This includes knots and rope handling, saiiling terms, points of sail, mooring techniques, safety and much much more. We also hope to be able to incorporate some of the parts of the non-tidal Day Skipper syllabus into your training which includes mooring the boat! This all means you will come away from a fantastic sailing holiday in beautiful surroundings with a wealth of knowledge that will serve as a solid foundation for any further sailing you chose to do.
Minimum age for this course is 8 years. Children are welcomed and encouraged. Our instructors aim to make learning fun for all ages, which includes visiting caves, swimming and icecream stops each day!

Day Skipper (non tidal)
This course teaches you the skills needed to safely skipper a yacht in familiar non-tidal waters by day.
You will be taught boat handling in non-tidal waters to a very high standard, basic pilotage, seamanship and navigation, safety and much more. The course duration is 5 days, including at least one night passage. The sixth day gives you the opportunity to take the boat without the skipper to either practice or just lie in the sun!
Whilst it is a reasonably intense course, there is still time to stop at a different port each night and enjoy the Ionian islands. You will have plenty of time at the helm and without tides to worry about, your learning can really focus on everything else, in particular the boat handling.
We suggest that you have completed at least 5 days sea time including 100 miles and 4 night hours prior to taking the course. This is commonly achieved in the form of a Competent Crew course. It would be beneficial to have day skipper theory before taking the course. The assumed knowledge for anyone considering the Day Skipper practical course is basic navigation and sailing ability.
