Travelling via Kefalonia to Lefkas is a fantastic alternative route if you have time to extend your holiday an extra day to make the journey more manageable. Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands and although famous among Greek and foreign tourists, it still manages to retain its natural qualities – quiet sandy beaches, beautiful seaside towns and welcoming local folk. Kefalonia famously became victim to a major earthquake in 1953 causing huge destruction with almost every building on the island destroyed, in fact the earthquake caused the entire island to be raised 60cm higher out of the water where it now remains. Look carefully at the rocks and you will see the evidence of this!
