Sail Ionian’s Pledge to Sustainable Sailing

We are turning green(er)!

Sail Ionian are committed to encourage sustainable sailing holidays so we are making an even bigger effort for the 2020 season to decrease our impact and our guests’ impact on climate change.

Our major changes for next season include a number of the fleet having a gantry and solar panels installed, and a huge proportion of the yachts ditching the petrol outboards and replacing them with eco-friendly electric outboards – this is a first for a charter company in the Ionian!

The Solar Panels are a fantastic feature, and anyone that’s had a boat with solar panels will not be so keen to go back to a boat without solar panels. The popularity of this eco-friendly and efficient feature on board a number of our yachts in previous yachts has meant that we will be equipping even more of our yachts with them for next year. Using the vast amounts of sunshine that we get here in the Ionian, solar panels mean that the batteries on board stay charged even without the engine running so that’s less noise pollution, less fuel consumption AND the ability to keep various yacht electrics running – most importantly the fridge! The solar panels are efficient enough to keep a fridge running cold non-stop.

The Electric Outboards are a new initiative for 2020 which we are sure are going to be very popular. We put a couple of different electric outboards up against a Honda 2.3hp and overall the performance of the electric outboard was impressive, and certainly good enough to persuade us to equip a number of our yachts with them for 2020. The batteries last around 1hr to 1.5hrs at full power with 4 people, recharge takes 8 hours and they are easily equivalent to a 3hp petrol outboard. A spare fully charged battery can be rented to people who expect high usage and don’t want to wait for 1 battery to recharge – a good idea if you have children who like pottering around in the dinghy! We will in fact be able to offer electric outboards to ANY yacht that requests it in advance – subject to availability.

See a list of yachts with solar panels and electric outboards at the bottom of this post…

Other things we are doing:

  • Encouraging recycling! We have recycling bins opposite the main office in Vliho – read our post here about the vast amount of things you can recycle¬†
  • We’ve binned disposable plastic straws in the caf√© – you’ll find our biodegradable straws instead
  • We’ve replaced single-use plastic cups at our drinks party
  • We are sourcing biodegradable soaps for the offices and shower block

Other things you can do while out sailing:

  • Pick up any trash you find floating out at sea, or on the beach and dispose of it ashore.
  • Seen dolphins? Don’t crowd them! Stay a good 100m away and certainly don’t chase them. Put your engine into neutral.
  • Choose eco-friendly suncreams – look for ones that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide rather than oxybenzone.
  • Decrease fuel consumption – slower speed = less fuel.
  • Even better – sail when possible and be at one with nature!
  • Consider rowing rather than using your outboard – or choose a yacht with an electric outboard!
  • Choose products sold in recycled or recyclable containers in the supermarket.
  • Re-use bags multiple times or bring reusable shopping bags with you.
  • Don’t let any rubbish go overboard.
  • Purchase local products where possible

Here’s a fact for you – every single piece of plastic ever produced is still somewhere on the planet… whether that be on land or at sea, it is toxic and is entering our ecosystem, food chain and is even found as toxins in our blood.

The next challenge we face – the hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles of water that tourists (and locals!) go through. The steps we have taken so far and will continue to take are a good start in a ‘green initiative’ but there’s lots more work to do…we’ll keep you updated!
